Genealogy Research

Genealogy research has become big business on the internet. There are thousands of websites dedicated to research. There are also programs available to help you organize and search for your ancestry.

Getting started can be a daunting task. Below is some information for beginners that may help ease the stress of gathering the information about your family.

Step 1

Organize your information.
You probably already have more information than you realize. Organize by marriages, children, birth and death.

Step 2

Gather information from living relatives. This is a great opportunity to reconnect with family members. It is also one of the best sources available to you. Grandmother's memory may not be exact but now you have a solid base from which to begin your research.

Step 3

Where do you put all this information to organize it? There are many software programs available for download. These can range from free to very expensive. Usually the average cost of good software is around $40.00. There are so many very good, high quality programs that are inexpensive I can't possibly list them all.
Do an internet search for "genealogy software" or "free genealogy software".
Once you have selected a program then enter your information you have gathered so far.

Step 4

Research, Research, Research.
Using the information you have now acquired you are ready to start searching the census, birth, marriage, death and military records. You may also need to search adoption records and cemetery, obituaries, graves, pensions, land and probate records, just to name a few.
Add all this information into your program.

Step 5

Getting Help
There are paid sites available that can help you with your research.
One of the best tools are genealogy forums. At the forums your fellow historians can help you search for that hard to find information. In forums you may come across someone who has already researched this information making your task that much easier.

Which ever path you choose to do your family research I am sure it will be rewarding.

Happy Hunting!
